The NNPC/MPN JV EMOIMEE Host Community Development Trust recently held its inaugural Annual General Meeting, marking a significant milestone in its journey to improve the lives of host communities in Akwa Ibom State. Established under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), the Trust aims to enhance the development of economic and social infrastructure in petroleum-producing communities.
As highlighted by the Board of Trustee Chairman, Chief Mrs Helen Esuene, the Trust covers seven local government areas: Eastern Obolo, Mbo, Onna, Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin, Eket, and Esit Eket. Since its inception, the Trust has recorded notable achievements, including 1,572 tertiary scholarships/bursaries, 143 secondary school scholarships, 100 ICT training participants, and 150 skill acquisition program participants.
According to the BOT Chairman, the Trust has also empowered 396 individuals through transportation initiatives and conducted eight medical outreach programs. Additionally, it has planted 20,000 improved palm oil seedlings and distributed three ambulances to communities in need.
She said that despite facing challenges such as delays in payment and inadequate community engagement, the Trust is committed to overcoming these obstacles. Plans are underway to enhance community engagement and information dissemination, provide training for Management Committee members and employees, and complete ongoing projects.
The Trust’s scholarship scheme, known as the Emoimee Scholarship Scheme, offers an annual award of ₦400,000 to 200,000 successful candidates. To be eligible, applicants must be indigenous individuals from seven Local Government Area enrolled in an accredited tertiary institution within Nigeria.
Applicants must have completed at least one session in their institution and maintain a minimum of Second Class Lower for universities, Upper Credit for polytechnics/Colleges of Nursing, and Merit for Colleges of Education.
The Trust’s efforts have been recognized, with the launch of the Host Community Development Trusts in Akwa Ibom State. This initiative is part of the Petroleum Industry Act’s provisions to promote community development.
The Incorporated Trustees of NNPC/MPN JV EMOIMEE Host Community Development Trust and the Incorporated Trustees of NNPC/MPN JV Host Community Development Trust were unveiled in July 2023.
